PREPARATION
1. Be sure the subject you plan to discuss is appropriate and choose an appropriate title
2. Be sure you can find sufficient material for your subject
3. Plan your preparation time and for the amounted time allowed for your presentation
4. Tailor your talk to your audience
5. Gather material: read and make comprehensive notes including all sources
6. Use an outline to organize your material in logical sequence
7. Read and rehearse your speech aloud many times in front of a mirror

OPENING
  • approach to the podium: walk quietly to the front of the room
  • pause - eye contact around the room
  • bearing: stand politely on both feet with relaxed but good posture
  • acknowledgments
  • DELIVERY
  • audibility: can everyone hear you
  • pitch (strained?)
  • variety in voice and emotion (monotonous?)
  • interesting intro: anecdote, quotation, challenging question to audience, etc.
