Following our strolls on the Bund we were bused to the Tian Hou Silk Factory which was primarily a silk store. Upon entering we were given demonstraions on the history of silk making.

During the demonstration, Bill wandered around the room taking photos of the many dioramas that illustrated the process.

We were presented with the history of the silk worm and a description of the stages of silk worm cultivation using visuals in preserved jars showing the various stages.  There were live worms eating mulberry leaves on display.

A single filament extraction machine that unravelled cocoons was demonstrated followed by the stretching of a silk filament to show its incredible strength. The demonstration of the making of silk cloth included a chance for us to pull and stretch the material.

Sales pitches for silk products such as duvets and pillows were given. To make such sales more practical for tourists leaving by air these products could be vacuum packed into small packages to minimize the luggage size.

We were then given a long time to wander through the huge show rooms displaying duvets, clothing, scarves, purses, souvenirs, etc. There was a small cafe area were those with no interest in making purchases could sit.

Surprisingly, the restaurant offered for the last day of our formal tour
was across the street from the hotel we had booked online a few weeks earlier.
