CH. 9: TRAVEL BACK TO PENANG
Georgetown Adventures
www.hillmanweb.com/malaysia/m09.html

Departure from Hotel Humble
Kerry and Edah are to meet family in the south for a trip
and are dropping us off at Penang along the way.

With Shahedah's brother Ah Ren and her niece Miriam.
Ah Rin helps keep the yard clean and Miriam cleans the veranda.

On Penang Bridge going into Georgetown.
The bridge is 13.5 km with 8.5 over the Penang Strait.
.

Entering Georgetown

Kerry and Shadedah drop us off at our hotel, Magpie Residence.
.

1. Our queen-size deluxe room for CDN 37.00, which included breakfast.
Magpie is a back-packers' hostel which offers cubicles for 7-9$ but they also offer full-size rooms.
2.Sue-On peeking out from the bathroom.
All have open showers which work well since the floors are tiled with good drainage.
Our backpacks complete with wheels and handles are visible.
.

1. TV but with few channels including Bloomberg Financial/News, a Chinese movie with subtitles,
and a Malaysian Food channel (which, of course, Sue-On enjoyed).
2. A Morris Minor in front of our hotel.
.

1. After dark we explored the streets of Georgetown hoping to find a restaurant that would take credit cards
The heat and humidity makes everyone sleepy, even this "guard cat" in front of a house on our walk.
2. An altar in front of a home or business.
The buildings all look old but they are trying to maintain the traditional / historical look of the area.
The insides are renovated, but not the exteriors.
3. A couple streets over, we found a restaurant that accepted credit cards
as we are rationing our ringgits for the ride to the airport and luggage charges.
Didn't want to have to pull out any more ringgits from ATM.
. .

1. We ate Cream of Mushroom Soup, Mi Mein with Pork Belly . . .
2. . . . and red wine braised Beef Cheeks, a new one for us
although Sue-On has often read about thenm in the food forum.
It's an actual chunk of muscle from a cow's cheek.
Because it is used so much - chewing cuds, it's quite sinewy.
But it is perfect for braising for long time, and becomes tender and flavourful.
.

1. Sue-On had Peach Tea (very refreshing), and Bill enjoyed his beer.
2. We stopped for a Chinese desert on the way back to the hotel.
.

Back to Magpie Residence after a busy day.
